For our tenth birthday in 2021 we decided to follow the excellent example of Spa Sweethearts WI, who made a piece of bunting to commemorate every meeting they’ve ever had. We started work on this at our January 2022 meeting – around 25 of us got to work making bunting triangles showing a meeting or activity that we’d really loved. However, 10 years of meetings plus numerous additional adventures means there are over 120 items we could include, so we’ve really only made a tiny dent in the project and this is something that will be ongoing for a while yet!
As on the whole we are not a very craft-focused WI, some important things to remember are:
- We don’t care how crafty you think you are. Don’t think oh, I couldn’t possibly make anything, I’m no good at all. We can help you! Grab Stephanie at any of out meetings and she can give you a template, help you plan, and help with any skills you’re not sure about. We also have a variety of tricks up our sleeve so if you are, say, an accomplished watercolour painter like Janet but have no interest in sewing, we can have your design scanned and printed up so it’s included.
- We don’t care if you make the your bunting flag on the same subject as someone else. While it would be very nice to include all the subjects we’ve ever covered it’s a bit unlikely for us – as a very urban WI our membership tends to be more changeable so we don’t have many members left from our first few years, and that’s fine. The important thing about this is that it should be collaborative and joyful!
